Why is there a smell coming from my fireplace?

✅ Normal Fireplace Smells

  1. Dust Burning Off

    • When a fireplace is first turned on for the season, dust that’s settled on the logs, burner, or firebox can create a temporary odor.

    • Usually fades after a few uses.

  2. New Fireplace Smell

    • Fresh paint, finishes, or sealants on a new or newly serviced fireplace may release odors the first few times it runs.

⚠️ Problem Smells to Watch For

  1. Gas or Rotten Egg Smell

    • Could indicate a gas leak.

    • Turn off the gas immediately and call your gas company or a certified technician.

  2. Chemical or Burning Plastic Odor

    • Could mean something (like wiring insulation, debris, or household items near the unit) is overheating.

    • Unsafe and should be checked right away.

  3. Smoke or Soot Odor

    • For wood fireplaces: often caused by a dirty chimney, poor draft, or blockages.

    • For gas fireplaces: could mean venting problems.

  4. Musty or Damp Smell

    • Usually from moisture in the chimney or mold in the venting system.

    • Common if the chimney cap is missing or leaking.

  5. Dead Animal or Nest Odor

    • Birds, squirrels, or other small animals can sometimes get into chimneys and cause odors.
