✅ Steps to Relight a Gas Fireplace Pilot Light
⚠️ Safety First: If you smell gas, do not attempt to relight it. Evacuate the area and call a professional.
-
Turn Off the Fireplace
-
Locate the gas valve (usually near the bottom or behind a panel).
-
Turn it to OFF and wait 5–10 minutes for residual gas to clear.
-
-
Access the Pilot
-
Open the fireplace panel to expose the pilot assembly.
-
-
Turn Gas to Pilot Mode
-
Turn the control knob to the “Pilot” position.
-
-
Ignite the Pilot
-
Press and hold the pilot knob/button.
-
While holding, use:
-
Built-in igniter (press the spark button) or
-
Match/lighter (if manual lighting is allowed — check your manual)
-
-
-
Hold the Pilot Button
-
Keep holding for 30–60 seconds after the flame lights.
-
This allows the thermocouple or thermopile to heat and signal the gas valve to stay open.
-
-
Turn to “On”
-
Once the pilot stays lit, turn the knob to ON and operate your fireplace normally.
-
🔎 Tips & Troubleshooting
-
If the pilot won’t stay lit, the thermocouple may be dirty or failing.
-
Make sure the pilot flame touches the tip of the thermocouple.
-
If it ignites but burns weak, check for dust or debris in the pilot or burner.
-
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions — some newer units have electronic ignition that works differently.
⚠️ Call a professional if:
-
You can’t get the pilot to stay lit.
-
You smell gas or hear hissing.
-
The pilot light keeps going out repeatedly.
