Why won’t my gas fireplace turn on?

  • Pilot light is out

    • If the pilot isn’t lit, the fireplace won’t start. Sometimes a draft, dust, or a faulty thermocouple/thermopile causes it to go out.

  • Gas supply issue

    • The gas valve may be turned off, the line could be blocked, or the tank (if propane) may be empty.

  • Dirty components

    • Dust, soot, or spider webs in the pilot assembly or burner can block the flame.

  • Faulty thermocouple or thermopile

    • These sensors tell the fireplace that the pilot is lit. If they fail, the system won’t allow gas flow for safety reasons.

  • Ignition system failure

    • The igniter (push-button, switch, or remote) could be worn out or not sparking.

  • Electrical or remote control issue

    • If your unit uses wall switches, remotes, or batteries, dead batteries or wiring problems could stop it from turning on.

  • Safety switch or limit switch tripped

    • Modern fireplaces have safety features that shut them down if overheating or malfunction is detected.
